{"id":1363,"date":"2019-03-27T20:48:32","date_gmt":"2019-03-27T20:48:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fivebridgestrust.ca\/wp\/?p=1363"},"modified":"2019-03-27T20:48:39","modified_gmt":"2019-03-27T20:48:39","slug":"agm-2019-news-and-trust-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivebridgestrust.ca\/wp\/?p=1363","title":{"rendered":"AGM 2019 \u2013 News and Trust Update"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p> The 18<sup>th<\/sup> annual general meeting of the Trust was held at the Estabrooks Community Hall on Sunday, March 17 and offered attendees a chance to learn about the past year\u2019s accomplishments and future plans and focus.\u00a0  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"5184\" height=\"3456\" src=\"https:\/\/fivebridgestrust.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Board-Members-at-AGM-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1364\"\/><figcaption><em>Left: Board Member volunteers Imbert Allen, Bridget Adams, Harry Ward and Wayne Rogers hosted the AGM event showcasing the work of the Trust.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>About 30 partners, members and supporters joined Board Members Harry Ward, Imbert Allen, Wayne Rogers and Bridget Adams as they reviewed the budget, grants program spending and events held to support and promote use of the Five Bridge Lakes Wilderness Area.\u00a0 Liberal MLA for Chester\/St. Margaret\u2019s Hugh MacKay was also in attendance, as well as Life Time Trust Members; Beth McGee, Geoff Le Boutilier, Jeff Parks and Gary Armsworthy.\u00a0 Two new volunteers were accepted on the Board of Trustees; Tammy Carew and Ken Donnelly, both will serve three-year terms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/baytreasurechest.ca\/\">Bay Treasure Chest<\/a> (BTC) partnership continues to be a wonderful financial support for the Trust.\u00a0 It was acknowledged and reported that with BTC funding, the Trust\u2019s Environmental Stewardship Grants Program has awarded $80,000 in the past two years to local community groups improving trails, bridges, training and access to wilderness experiences.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2019, the Trust suspended the Program and earmarked the funds for land purchases that would expand the wilderness area, especially at access points that currently are restricting for hikers \/ canoes or are deemed environmentally significant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the business portion of the meeting, Raymond Plourde, wilderness coordinator at the <a href=\"https:\/\/ecologyaction.ca\/\">Ecology Action Centre<\/a> shared a wonderful presentation focused on the state of Nova Scotia\u2019s forests.\u00a0 Plourde shared the alarming stats that clear cutting to provide local and European electricity plants, pulp mills and pellet production plants have significantly reduced the age classes, diversity and overall health of our forest ecosystems.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-3 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"974\" height=\"650\" src=\"https:\/\/fivebridgestrust.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Picture1.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"1365\" class=\"wp-image-1365\"\/><\/figure><\/li><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"962\" height=\"642\" src=\"https:\/\/fivebridgestrust.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Picture3.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"1366\" data-link=\"https:\/\/fivebridgestrust.ca\/wp\/?attachment_id=1366\" class=\"wp-image-1366\"\/><\/figure><\/li><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"502\" height=\"377\" src=\"https:\/\/fivebridgestrust.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Picture4.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"1367\" data-link=\"https:\/\/fivebridgestrust.ca\/wp\/?attachment_id=1367\" class=\"wp-image-1367\"\/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fivebridgestrust.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Buttons.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1369\" width=\"227\" height=\"169\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fivebridgestrust.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Ray-Plourde-and-Harry-Ward.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1368\" width=\"319\" height=\"219\"\/><figcaption><em>Left: <\/em>Ray Plourde delivered a very informative presentation about our forests and was thanked by Harry Ward with promo items from the Trust.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>For climate change action, one of the key ways we can help reduce and capture CO2 emissions is to maintain and, where lost, rebuild mature forests.\u00a0 According to a study in 1995, less than two per cent of Nova Scotia\u2019s forest area was over 80 years old.\u00a0 In 1958, 25 per cent of Nova Scotia\u2019s forest area was this mature. We can only imagine what the number for 2019 would be &#8211; lower still indeed.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Campaigns and protests to reduce clear cutting have been somewhat successful. The government has <a href=\"https:\/\/novascotia.ca\/natr\/forestry\/Forest_Review\/Government-Response-to-Independent-Forestry-Report.pdf\">committed to implement<\/a> the recently released <a href=\"https:\/\/novascotia.ca\/natr\/forestry\/Forest_Review\/Lahey_FP_Review_Report_ExecSummary.pdf\">Lahey Report on Forestry Practice<\/a> which calls for a major reduction in clearcutting on Crown land and shift to \u201cecological forestry\u201d. Government has also <a href=\"https:\/\/nslegislature.ca\/legc\/bills\/63rd_2nd\/1st_read\/b116.htm\">tabled new legislation<\/a> aimed at better protect biodiversity in Nova Scotia and has also just announced the signing of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/nova-scotia\/forestry-mi-kmaw-native-indigenous-1.5058292\">Mi\u2019kmaq Forestry Initiative<\/a> which will see 20,000 hectares of Crown land managed by the Mi\u2019kmaq. Plourde urged all attendees to talk about this issue and share the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthyforestcoalition.ca\/\">Healthy Forest Coalition<\/a>\u2019s \u201cStop the Clear Cutting\u201d buttons with friends and neighbours.\u00a0    No forests.
